Saving Private Ryan, Team Fortress 2 style

Team Fortress 2 DemomanFrom the ’stupid video that’s actually kind of inspired’ department comes Saving Private Ryan, Team Fortress 2 style. There really isn’t much I can say about this video other than point you towards it, but I’m so obsessed with Team Fortress 2 right now I think I’ll excuse myself on this occassion.

Enjoy! Although please note that this video will entirely fail if you don’t actually play Team Fortress 2, in which case I’d recommend that you sort yourself out. Just imagine how much fun you could be having right now, playing with me! You can stalk me using my Steam Community page if you already have the game.

And while we’re on the subject, you have seen Meet the Heavy, Meet the Soldier, Meet the Engineer, and Meet the Demoman, right? The last one is my favourite.

Oh man that was excellent. The first time it did the ‘dominating’ jingle was hilarious. But now I feel bad because I’ve been researching the Nazis recently for one of my modules at Uni, and that video made Normandy seem like a hilarious and fun game.

But well made!

Haha, yes. As I was watching it I was consciously aware of how seriously I could take that scene and the battle lessening with every passing second. I mean, when I first saw the film it was a very hard-hitting and powerful sequence!

Outstanding blog, professional quality!. I suppose in a couple of years well read your articles in PC World or something….Totally out of this discussion, but althought Im absolutelly glued to TF2 Im really pissed off: the lack of quality/support of the SDK for Orange Box. Will we ever be able to properly mod for it? (I mean, no dirty tricks, unsupported shortcuts…) Congrats again for your cool blog, keep up the good work!!!

Heh, thanks. ;) Regarding the SDK, it is constantly updated but Valve have historically been very slow at getting it into a fully usable and stable state. They’re also slow at getting games out, but that’s another matter.

I believe the SDK is mostly usable for TF2 right now (it was terrible when TF2 first came out) as people have made some really nice stuff with it, but as usual certain areas a bit flakey. All I can do is recommend you stick with it and leave the bits you need missing functionality for until later.

One thing you could do is check out MapCore, which is full of professional game developers. You can usually get some great feedback on your maps in the WIP forum, and if you have any editor problems someone can probably help you out. It’s also probably a better place to have a good moan about the SDK. :)

I found myself playing TF2 significantly less than I expected me too, mostly because of the fact that if I play against more than 5 other people my FPS drops below 5.

The performance is a bit of a pain for a lot of people, and it’s very unfortunate you can’t really enjoy the game as a result. It looks like a game that’s going to be around for the long term (like its predecessors) though, so perhaps once you get a bit more power behind your machine you can jump in. :)

Yes well I’m going to get a lap top for my 18th birthday (..in two and a half year though) and it should be able to run TF2 fine :)
