Coca-Cola demonstrates it understands today’s youth again

Grand Theft Auto: Coca Cola It’s not very often that video game culture creeps into areas outside of its own, so when you get TV ads for things like Coca-Cola clearly based upon a video game it’s usually worth talking about. Those who visited my old website may remember my post about Coca-Cola’s World of Warcraft advert (now available here).

I thought that might have been a bit of a one-off, but it looks like Coca-Cola has followed up with an advert based on Grand Theft Auto, even if there’s nothing that directly ties it to the series other than the style: quirky animations, similar angles, to what you see ingame, and of course all the stereotypical elements of a GTA game. Except without the violence.

It’s pretty tongue-in-cheek and really well done. It’s also sure to strike a chord with many of the Western world’s youth, most of whom are familiar with the series.

and not only that. they dont have to pay a penny to the main distributors of the advert: youtube and google video.

>Coca-Cola demonstrates it understands today’s youth again

And you demonstrate you have no understanding of the advertising industry.

The advertisement is targetted at people in their mid 30s to early 40s. Those with children approaching their teens and learning the art of rebellion and back talking. Those parents often associate violent games with the lack of morality they perceive within their children.

The subliminal message of the advertisment is that Coca Cola can encourage their children to grow to be respectful, mature adults.

The advertisement is careful not to alienate the children, it reatians enough “street cred” so they won’t be repulsed by the product. However your suggestion that it may be targetted towards children is incorrect.

Although I’m very certain they’ve made sure that their advertisment will be attractive to blog weilding morons who will give them free viral advertsing for their addictive beverage!

Coca-Cola does and always has understood the youth market. You don’t become the world’s number one brand without that understanding.

Heh, I wasn’t really suggesting anything. I was merely pointing out a fairly nice advertisement that is based upon a popular video game. Because after all, this is a video game blog. My readers tend to enjoy stuff like that.

I wasn’t trying to provide an insightful opinion on which demographic the ad is targetted at and I’m sorry if you got the wrong impression and read into it a little too heavily. Evidently this is an area that you feel strongly about as you went so far as to indirectly call me a blog-wielding moron, but I’m sorry to say you’re looking at the wrong place for that type of thing.

Also, why the silly name? Aren’t you willing to put your identity next to your opinions?
